Choosing the Right Style for a Funeral Program
In this new post, I want to go over some important points when choosing the right template, and help you understand the difference between a well-designed, high-quality template and one that may look good at first glance but is not really well resolved.
When choosing a funeral program template, most people focus on what is immediately visible: color, format, or overall style. However, that is only the surface. What really determines whether a template feels right and conveys quality lies in the details that are often not consciously perceived.
Design is not only something you see, it is something you read and, above all, something you feel.
- Typography defines the tone of the event
Choosing the right typography is not a minor detail. It is one of the elements that most clearly defines the character of a template. All LifeMomentsPaper, designs are created to be edited in Canva, so everything I explain here is based on how you can work with these elements inside Canva.
If we take a closer look at any design, we will see that typography can completely change how it feels. We do not use the same type of font for a wedding, a baby shower, or a funeral program. Each typeface carries meaning, it conveys emotions and sets a tone.
In fact, together with its size and color, typography is what makes a design feel appropriate for a specific type of event.
For funeral programs, I personally like to use fonts such as Libre Franklin or Montserrat because they provide clarity and structure. And this is also important for the client: these are not Pro elements in Canva, so there is no extra cost when printing the obituary.
These fonts make reading easier without needing to increase the text size or force the design with unnecessary bold styles. At the same time, introducing a serif font like Cormorant for titles or names adds a more ceremonial tone without making the layout feel heavy.
Typography, when chosen well, brings elegance on its own. And it is very easy to change in Canva. You simply select the text and try different options, for example Libre Franklin for body text. If it does not feel right, you can always go back using the undo option.
But it is important to remember that a font should not just look nice, it needs to work within the context of the template.
- Size, color and spacing: small adjustments that change everything
Beyond typography, there are small decisions that completely transform readability. This is where we need to talk about something essential: legibility.
It is not just about the font you choose, or making it bigger while everything else stays compressed or too close to the images.
There are more professional ways to improve readability without breaking the design. One of them is adjusting the letter spacing. Slightly increasing the space between letters improves the reading rhythm and makes the text feel cleaner.
Color also plays an important role. A well-balanced contrast makes the text easier to read without being harsh, while colors that are too light can make reading difficult.
And there is something that should not be overlooked: many of the people reading these programs are older. That means text that is too small or too compressed can be uncomfortable to read, even if the design looks more “refined”.
We cannot sacrifice functionality for the sake of aesthetics. If we reduce the text too much just to fit more photos, usability disappears and the overall quality of the work drops.
Elegance is not about making text smaller. It is about making it readable.
- Photography as the core of the narrative
Today, photography has become even more important than text in many funeral programs. It does not just support the content, it tells the story of a person’s life in a much more direct and emotional way.
All those moments, memories, and shared experiences take on a new meaning in this context and often connect more deeply than written descriptions.
However, more photos do not mean a better result. In fact, templates that include too many images often make it harder to follow the story. Instead of adding clarity, they create visual noise and mix all moments together, reducing their individual importance.
The key is how we organize those photographic blocks.
They work much better when they follow a recognizable structure: personal life, family, friends, work or institution, especially in cases where the person served in a specific role or profession.

- Order, space and perceived quality
Working with editable templates in Canva allows you to adjust all of these elements without needing technical skills.
That is why, in the PDF files that customers receive after purchase, I always include the same note: yes, you can edit and print your design without having a Canva account. But if you want to save your work and continue later, you will need a user account, otherwise Canva has no place to store your changes.
Personally, I recommend creating a Canva account. It is free and it allows you to save your work, make changes as many times as needed, and adjust your design without pressure, whether you want to add more photos, remove them, or refine the layout.
I will not go into Canva Pro elements and alternatives in this post, as that deserves a more detailed explanation in a separate article.
Canva is just a tool. It does not define the final quality of your work, but it makes the process much easier. And if you have made many changes and feel that nothing works anymore, the best thing to do is to close the design and reopen the link provided in the PDF. You may need to start again, but this time with clearer ideas.
And finally, I want to share something important. In my shop, I work with different price ranges, but none of them define the quality of the design.
