Canva Templates: How to Unlock and Customize Your Design
A STRATEGIC INTRODUCTION
If you’re here, it’s most likely because you are a LifeMomentsPaper customer, and I want to thank you for that. This post has a clear goal: to help you set up your template easily so you can achieve a professional result on your own.
And if you’re here but aren’t a customer yet, thank you as well. Sharing this content with you is a pleasure. If you decide to trust us in the future, it will be an honor to serve you. At LifeMomentsPaper, our true specialty is funerals, celebrations of life, and homegoings. We will all depart one day, but we want to do so with the same dignity with which we lived our lives. However, we also offer elegant templates and designs for weddings—not everything is about loss.
I won’t go on any further—even though I’m a bit of a romantic when it comes to early 2000s-style blogs, haha! Here is the most important thing to know before downloading your template (this is a five-star priority):
***** IMPORTANT: You can open this template directly using the link provided. You may view, edit, and download the file without creating a Canva account. However, if you would like to save your design and return to it later, you will need to log into a Canva account. A free Canva account is sufficient; Canva Pro is NOT required.
THE “PERSISTENT” ADVICE (BUT NECESSARY)
Let me insist: you are going to have a better idea or remember a detail right before you hit print. If you aren't logged in, you won’t be able to change a single thing without starting over from scratch. In a situation as stressful as preparing a funeral for a loved one, you should not add more stress. Please, just log in.
I know how we are: “I’ll just do this quickly and print it.” But then, once we have it... “Ufff, I forgot to include this” or “My brother just brought us new photos.” If you don’t have your work saved, you have to redo everything. That happens—it’s human. It’s better to stay one step ahead. Five minutes spent logging in now will save you an hour of frustration later.
1. THE “LOCK”: YOUR SECURITY AND YOUR FREEDOM
When you open a LifeMomentsPaper template, you need full control. Designers usually leave elements “locked” so you don’t accidentally move anything—like a frame accidentally sliding into a photo by mistake.
Take control of your template. Unlock it, and work carefully without rushing.
How to Unlock Objects for Editing
The Icon: If you click on an object and see a small padlock, it is locked. Simply click the lock icon to unlock it.
The Master Key: If there is a lock you cannot see, go to the slide thumbnails at the bottom. Click the three dots (…), select “Lock” first, and then choose “Unlock all.”

This gives you full freedom to edit text or even remove photo frames you don’t need. My expert advice: Unlock to edit, then lock again to protect your hard work.

However, sometimes when the background is locked, you won’t be able to move objects freely or create new space to add photos or elements such as new space for another photo or delete one in the design.
To do this properly, the background must be unlocked, and you will need to work carefully to avoid accidentally moving it.
My advice is to delete elements using the trash icon rather than dragging them outside the template.
To unlock the background, if you notice that clicking on the lock icon does not release it and it remains locked, you will need to use the three dots on the page thumbnail located below your working area.
Position yourself on the page you want to unlock.

A menu will open. From there, first select “Lock”, and then choose “Unlock all”.
These two children's funeral templates can serve as a good example. They include many visible elements that work well when they are partially locked.
